Joseph J. Ellis Pulitzer Prize-winning, National Book Award-winning historian Joseph J. Ellis has been described as “an eloquent champion and brilliant practitioner of the old-fashioned art of biography,” by The New York Times and one of “the finest of America’s narrative historians,” by Publishers Weekly. His books include American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson; His Excellency: George Washington; Passionate Sage: The Character and Legacy of John Adams; Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation; and American Creation: Triumphs and Tragedies at the Founding of the Republic. Ellis has been a featured commentator on CSPAN, CNN, and PBS’s The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, and he has appeared in several PBS documentaries on early America.
